Deer hunting at Sweetwater Plantation is managed for
quality bucks and a healthy overall deer population. Our aim
is for only 4.5 year old or older mature bucks to be harvested
on the property. Hunters learn to judge a deers age
by body shape and size and to a lesser extent the size and
the potential for growth of the antlers. A balanced number
of mature does are also harvested each year to help keep the
buck to doe ratio somewhat consistent. Harvested deer are
processed in our meat room for consumption and records are
kept on age, weight, antler measurements, as well as the place
and time that they are taken.
Wild hogs are hunted and trapped
year round for meat and to try and keep their population
under control. The thick cover of the creek bottoms and
swamps attract and hold them here were there numbers seem
to increase expediently. Extremely efficient at reproduction,
a mature sow can have up to 3 litters of often a dozen or
more pigs a year. They root up and damage pastures and crops
as well as compete for food with indigenous wildlife.
